"CONNECTING LOCAL RESOURCES WITH LOCAL NEEDS"

Click here to go to Friendsofaroostook.com

Friends of Aroostook is an outreach program that consist of three complementary components: OWH (Operation Wood Heat), SFPP (Summer Fresh Produce Program) and HSC (Helping Senior Citizens).

Operation Wood Heatconsist of wood contractors, municipalities and individuals who donate tree length wood to our site. Volunteers then cut, split and pile the wood during the summer months. Throughout the winter, needy families are helped with their heating needs by receiving a free pickup load of firewood.

Summer Fresh Produce Program gives Empowering Life the ability to connect locally grown produce with area people in need of nutritional fruits and vegetables. Growers in Southern Aroostook plant various types of fruits and vegetables for this project. High school youth and other volunteers do the harvesting. Food Pantries assist by distributing the fresh produce to 25 food pantries throughout the county.

Helping Senior Citizens connects fresh produce, donated by area gardeners to 12 senior citizens complexes. Gardeners, voluntary youth and others harvest the produce, and Empowering Life places it in the complexes. Produce programs begin in June and end in October. During Thanksgiving, Christmas and the Easter seasons, local farmers donate potatoes, and Empowering Life delivers them to the senior homes.
